![]() ![]() To its credit, Dirt Rally 2.0’s stages are the best-looking in the series to date – especially in the wet – and each of the six countries represented are wonderfully distinct from one another. How that’s vastly inferior than running the same few stages and encountering the same shared sections indefinitely, however, is not clear to me. One of the criticisms of Your Stage was that it wasn’t long until it was clear you were just running over riffs of the same turns and junctions. Lighting changes and varied weather conditions notwithstanding, running repeatedly over the same ribbons of road quickly becomes sapping. “The downside, of course, is that sticking with pre-made stages means we’re back to having just a couple of long stages per location chopped up into segments to run forwards and backwards. It also means stages that more closely resemble actual rally locations admittedly you can’t necessarily rely on random chance to recreate roads that will remind rally fans of real-life rally stages. The gain with stages touched by artists rather than algorithms is that they do have noticeably more character and, being bespoke, there are numerous little idiosyncrasies and unique elements that you wouldn’t necessarily get from a computer stitching together a bunch of tweaked track tiles. Dirt Rally 2.0 opts for handcrafted stages, like the first Dirt Rally. All the World’s a StageFailing to make the jump from Dirt 4 is the procedurally-generated stage system “Your Stage”, which I still think has a lot of promise. Dirt Rally’s reputation as Dark Souls on gravel remains intact. Crank it higher and you’ll need to be fast and faultless. At normal difficulty levels, however, it can be tough to top a timesheet after even a single mistake. At its weakest, the AI in Dirt Rally 2.0 can be soundly trounced even after making a big error or two, so the barrier for success has been lowered a bit. Move your cursor over the value to see individual results.Play For players who were turned off by the first game’s ruthless AI, Dirt Rally 2.0 features a difficulty slider similar to the F1 series, rather than the several AI pre-sets included in the first game. So, whatever advantages one usually expects for an open standard are noticeably absent from the FOSI world-in that sense it might as well be proprietary. FOSI specifically, while it may be theoretically an “open standard”, in reality there are only a couple of vendors that support it (and I’m not sure if DataLogics even still exists or supports FOSI publishing?), and there are few if any sources for documentation, training, etc on the standard apart from the vendors. ![]() Once a feature that was previously extension-only gets incorporated into the spec, vendors are usually quite good about using the new spec’s implementation and deprecating their old extensions for the same thing.Īlso, w.r.t. For one thing, it helps standards orgs see where the gaps are in their specs, so they can fix those issues in the next revision of the spec (hopefully). If you are an implementation vendor, and you know most of your customers need feature X which isn’t included in the standard, you’re going to have to add extensions. Standards are incomplete, and contain ambiguities, despite the best efforts of the committees drafting them. But we all know that never happens in real life. Ideally, the open standard would provide everything that anyone could ever need, and there would never be a need for extensions. The more tedious gimmicks skip the playfulness of dodging cars when crossing an impractically placed street, or a hot air balloon crashing down onto an earlier level-a sushi restaurant-after a lightning storm zapped it. Whenever I ran into a level with levers or buttons as a central conceit, it usually served as a tedious addition rather than a new instrument to creatively think around. Sometimes though, Overcooked 2's newfound ambition gets in the way of its stages, overcomplicating things. (But food on the ground? That's still a-okay, edible, and totally not a health code violation!) Some levels are even constructed with this in mind, with conveyor belts for pot and plate-passing needs. After all, the plate could break or something. The only catch with throwing is that you cannot throw pots, pans, or plated food. You can even throw things directly onto a pan or pot, so you don't even need the other character to catch it immediately. In Overcooked 2 you can catch and receive raw ingredients-sliced or not. And I mean really throw it, not fumble it with a well-timed dash as in the original game. One big change that I surprisingly found essential to a successful cook off is the renewed ability to throw food. Its world map is far more colorful, and its little van transforms into a boat or plane when on certain areas, which is a sweet little touch. Its story mode is deeper, with levels following a clear arc over its stages. But from the start, Overcooked 2 is more ambitious. ![]() Overcooked 2 builds on the solid foundation of its predecessor.
